Welcome to the forum. It is not very lively on here so I missed your post until now. Newfies do not grow up quicker - they just grow bigger quicker! In fact they read two thirds of their adult size by the time they are 8 months old, they finish growing at about 2, but they are not fully mature until they are four. It is true that they are calmer than most puppies, not wanting to play all the time, but that is because they are very delicate when growing and need plenty of rest and no long walks and definitely no running. They know this, so they are a lot calmer. However, that doesn't make them any less destructive! Ferdie ate up four dining chairs, seven sky remotes, two mobile phones, an office chair and chewed a hole through an internal brick wall. Joshua is a much more serious dog and always has been. He has never done any puppy things like running off with stuff so you will chase him and has hardly chewed anything, but then he had Ferdie for company. Ferdie had only my son and I for the first two years. They are wonderful dogs, amazingly gentle and friendly, but if you are in any way concerned about the state of your house, don't get one! I have never seen a dog with so much fur, and they slobber everywhere.
You can email me privately if you want to know any more:

Yes, it is. Sorry to say it, but nothing much happens on here and you are not notified of new posts in your thread, even if you do tick the little box at the bottom. It is a pity, because newfies are an extra special breed and somewhere is definitely needed to discuss them.
I just keep popping back occasionally to see if anything has happened. This morning I wanted to view a post and it told me I had to reply to it first! Can't reply if I haven't read.
Anyway, I can't see your post on this bit, so did you say you had a 10 month old and now getting a new puppy? Good luck with that!
I have Ferdinand, who is four years old and he was two when we got Joshua, who was eight weeks at the time. Great age gap, really, as Joshua has never needed any real training except housetraining because he just copies Ferdie. They are also both young enough to have a good game together, but unfortunately, Joshua has developed arthritis in his front knees so cannot walk very far. Ferdie won't go without him, so he is not getting the walks he should.
Don't give up though. Come back and tell us all about your newfies and I for one will see it.
Take care.

Hi there was wondering if anyone can give me advice on newfoundlands....we are looking to get one in the next couple of years we adore them, we are stuck between adopting an older one or getting a pup and starting from new, we have spoken to some people but im just not too sure what to believe so i thought id post something on a forum for more info,now..... people i.e breeders have told us that newfie puppies are alot calmer and less destructive than other puppies due to growing up quicker and maturing quicker, and that there quite quiet and reserved as puppies, is this really true, we are well prepared for the normal puppy behaviour but i just cant see how such a large breed dog can be calmer than other breeds , i would have thought bigger dog more damage.please give me any advice on getting a puppy, would be very appreciated.thanks katie x

Firstly, eight months with no socialisation or walking training is going to be hard, so don't think you have a particularly boisterous newfie - you don't, you just have a dog like all the others! You need a gentle leader or a dogmatic headcollar first off. They work like a horse's headcollar - if they can't get their nose up, they cannot run. To start with, she will try to paw it off every few minutes. Just stand still and wait until she has given up, then walk on. Use a short lead and keep her by your side.
Don't let her off lead until she has learned to come back. You need a very long lead, horse's lunge lead or something suitable to teach her this.
She doesn't need loads of exercise. She is still growing and needs gentle walking and no more than 15 minutes running or you will find she has trouble with her limbs. Above all, always be calm with her. This is not the sort of dog who should be allowed to become over excited so don't roll about on the floor with her or play any games which will cause over excitement.
I would suggest just gentle walking in a populated area to start with so that she can meet people and other dogs and know that there is more out there.
I hope this is of some help and do get back and let me know how things are going.
Margaret

I would like to read your post, but this stupid thing tells me I have to reply first. How I am supposed to reply to a post I cannot read, I really can't imagine. Perhaps this will work.

Newfielover is right, the grooming is a nightmare. We had a lady who came to bath coco once every 6 weeks. We would groom her almost everyday but she still ended up tangled. Coco was a bitch and she drooled so much. Especially when eating. I still have her slobber on my ceiling and haven't yet got the heart to remove it since she died. I would say your house will become a kennel in the time you have a Newf but it is worth every single minute.
