Hello!
we got our newfie Hollie-belle jus before xmas, i wouldnt get an expensive bed as they grow pretty quick and you will find they will never sleep on it as they get so warm, also we got her a huge dog crate to sleep in, she settled alot better for the night in one.

Hi,
We are hopefully getting a Newfoundland next weekend! I can't wait!
My partner has had dogs before but I haven't. We read that they don't like heat - living in North Wales, UK, this shouldn't be a problem, but we are going shopping tomorrow for doggie stuff and just wondering what the best kind of bed for our pup would be?

Thanks!

Hi everyone!

I just discovered this site and I'm really thrilled to have the chance to discuss with other Newf owners. I live in the province of Quebec in Canada and in my region, I'm one of the rare Newf owner, so it's hard to discuss about my dog breed with people!

My Newf is six months old right now, his name is Oscar and he's adorable even if the knows how to get attention!

Looking forward the discussions!
Evelyne

My six months old Oscar still bites when he wants our attention, as an example, when we're eating!

I do agree with exercise. When he's tired from a day in the woods, or an hour at a dog park, or a long walk, he chews on his own toys and eventually crash down to sleep.

I also treat him with bones you can buy at petshops, it has cooked meat on and he can really release the pressure in his mouth with that for an hour and more. I was already giving him such bones at 16 weeks and it worked. The other trick is to go when he bites. You say "no", you show you don't want to play, and you leave him. It's a way to make him understand that when he bites, it's not accepted and you run from him, which he's supposed to dislike.

We just brought our puppy home from the breeder's on the 14th of April 2010. It was a Wednesday. When we brought her home she didn't have much of an appetite and was always sleeping. Just being a stressed puppy in a new home right? Wrong.

On Sunday she threw up 5 times within 30 minutes. She slept ALL day. Started to have diarrhea. On Monday, she kept throwing up some and still had diarrhea and now she has lost her appetite and won't eat at all. On Monday, she seemed perkier and ate a bowl of dog food and wasn't throwing up but still had diarrhea. But then at 4am Tuesday, she threw up this foul smelling brown liquid.

I woke up my Fiance and told him what was going on and then a minute later, she threw up A LOT more watery brown liquid. I told him something is really wrong and we need to get her to the vet. So at 8am, she had some more diarrhea and we took her in. We thought she had gotten into some Zoloft and her blood work came in perfect but her x-rays showed an upset stomach and inflamed intestines.

We kept her at the hospital overnight for fluids and meds since she was dehydrated. The next morning, the vet calls us saying she had bloody diarrhea and they tested her for parvo. It was positive. This was Tuesday. Wednesday the vet said she wasn't throwing up but still had diarrhea.

Today, Thursday morning, I called and her WBC dropped to 1 from the normal 7. She hadn't thrown up yet but still had diarrhea. When I went to go visit her at 4:30 pm. Her WBC dropped to .9 and had just thrown up 30 minutes earlier. If her WBC is the same or drops more by tomorrow, she will need a plasma transfusion.

Has anyone ever had a baby newfie with parvo? And if so, how did they fair? I love this little girl so much and I am so heartbroken that we got a sick puppy from the breeder...We know it had to come from there because there are now 3 other sick puppies from the litter, two of which are still in the breeder's care.

The tech's say our puppy is affectionate and wants to play for a puppy with parvo...But of course she does! She's just a little newf who loves people :(

There is nothing he cannot reach, and he is the most terrible thief! He will get on the worktop the minute my back is turned and help himself to whatever is up there. He took my glasses out into the garden a few weeks ago, and I cannot see to drive without them. Took ages to find them. But the other week, he actually stole a gammon steak right out of the frying pan without disturbing the pan and, apparently, without hurting himself. I have always been able to stop a dog from jumping up the worktop before, but he is impossible.

All puppies chew and being so big, newfies can do a great deal of damage. Ferdie ate his way through four dining chairs, an office chair, seven sky plus remotes and two mobile phones. Not to mention chewing a big hole through a brick wall. I expected it with a dog so strong. Best get some chew deterrent to spray everywhere; it tastes disgusting and usually puts them off for good. Someone suggested Vics vapour rub, but I don't know if that would be harmful. If he bites your hands, just keep your hand still and say no in a very firm voice; they usually get the message after a few days. A smack on the nose doesn't hurt, but makes their eyes water so they don't like it. Joshua hasn't done nearly so much damage, because he has Ferdie for company.

I don't have young children myself, but I am often asked by mothers when I am walking if their youngster can stroke them. They sit as patient as anything and let babies as young as one year cuddle them. They love children, but as said, I would never leave a child alone with these or any other dog.
